The 2nd Meeting of Working Group on the Revision of IMO Maritime English Model Course Held in London

The IMLA Working Group of the Revision of IMO Maritime English Model Course 3.17, met for the second time at the IMO headquarters in London on 19th and 20th May 2014. Under the guidance of Mr. Milhar Fuazudeen, Head of IMO Subcommittee of HTW, the meeting turned out to be a productive one. Prof. Jin Yongxing, Chair of IMLA, Prof. Clive Cole, Secretary of IMLA, Ms. Catherine Logie , Manager of Marlins, Capt. Fred Anstey from Marine Institute of Newfoundland Memorial University, and Prof. Chen Yuli from Shanghai Maritime University presented the meeting.
Prof. Jin addressed the welcome speech firstly. After a brief review on the process and the outcome of the first working group meeting in Shanghai, Mr. Milhar introduced the relationship between effective communication, maritime English and Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP), the intent of this revision and the validation procedure of model course etc. The meeting concluded with a clear direction and detailed allocation of the revision.
IMO HTW 1 Session agreed with the IMLA’s proposal for revising the model course of Maritime English and delegated IMLA to carry out the revision work. The draft text is required to be submitted to the IMO Secretariat at the end of October, 2014 and will be validated by HTW 2 session which is expected to be held in February 2015.
