Corporate Executive Development Program for NIMASA
From 10-14 November, 19 senior and mid-level managers from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) were at WMU to participate in a Corporate Executive Development Program (CEDP).
The program focused on the latest developments in maritime management on the international level including international maritime conventions, regulations and policies, governance, risk management, human resource management, corporate social responsibility (CSR), organizational behavior, control measures, and management of change. Topics of discussion included high profile issues ranging from climate change and ballast water management to piracy and maritime governance. Learning objectives for the program were aimed at strengthening leadership and motivating change while handling conflict and crises to enhance overall human capacity of the national maritime and port administrations to contribute to a better global performance of shipping.
The course was team-taught by WMU faculty including Professors Olof Linden and Daniel Moon, Associate Professors Michael Baldauf, Yoshinobu Takei, Aref Fakhry, Michael Manuel, and Ilias Visvikis, Assistant Professors Dimitrios Dalaklis and Lisa Froholdt, and Research Assistant Raza Ali Mehdi.
NIMASA has engaged WMU for a variety of professional development courses over the past few years and several alumni are employed at the agency, two of whom participated in the CEDP; Aliyu Lawan (M.Sc. 1994 SM), Chief Cabotage Officer, Invoicing, and Ikioumoton Fredrick Ugo (M.Sc. 2011 MEOM), Assistant Director Shipping Promotion. Nigeria is second in the country with the most graduates from WMU with a total of 168.
