IMLA successfully hosted the International Symposium of “Maritime Education and Training”

 
In response to the 2015 theme of IMO World Maritime Day—— Maritime Education and Training (MET),  International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA) and Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) , hosted the international symposium of “New Normal, New MET” in Shanghai, from 26th to 27th May, 2015. Representatives from China and foreign countries, together with lecturers and students from SMU, in a grand total of more than 200, participated in the symposium.    
 
Mr. Jin Yongxing,  Honorary Chair of IMLA and  Chairman of Board of SMU, and Mr. Chang Fuzhi, Deputy Director-General of Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, made opening addresses respectively. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Clive Cole, the Secretary of IMLA. 
 
Honorary Chair Jin yongxing expressed the view that the shipping industry could not thrive without the dedication and effort of a labour force educated and trained to the appropriate international maritime standards, meanwhile MET was an important component of the sustainable development of shipping industry, and wished to highlight the importance of Maritime Education and Training to everybody through this symposium. 
 
Deputy Director-General Chang Fuzhi pointed out that high-quality seafarers played a significant role in the aspects of ship navigation safety and prevention of marine pollution from ships, and the promotion and development of overall level of shipping industry would be affected by the quality of MET. 
 
Mr. Nakazawa Takeshi, the Secretary of International Association of Maritime Universities, Mr. Mei Dequan, the Deputy General Manager of China Shipping International Ship Management Co., Ltd., Mr. Xu Yunping, the Deputy General Manager of Shanghai Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd., Mr. Jan van der Borght, the General Representative of Antwerp Port Authority and Prof. Tomasz Tarasiuk of Gdynia Maritime University-Poland etc. respectively made keynote speeches in the symposium.
 
Mr. Clive Cole, the Secretary of IMLA, Mr. Nakazawa Takeshi, the Secretary of International Association of Maritime Universities, Mr. Hu Yuexiang, the Senior Captain of China Shipping International Ship Management Co., Ltd., Mr. Yan Zhengping, the Senior Captain of Shanghai Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd. and Mr. Cao Qingzhu, the Senior Captain of Shanghai Costamare Shipping Management Co., Ltd., took part in the “seafarers in classroom” activity during the symposium, together with local and foreign students from SMU.Focusing on the theme of World Maritime Day, the students proceeded the learning competition in groups and the champion team was selected by the judges. Then Mr. Nakazawa Takeshi and Associate Professor Chen Yunli of Merchant Marine College of SMU jointly presented the prize to the winning group.
