Prof. Kinzo Inoue Contributes His Book to IMLA E-library

Kinzo Inoue, Professor Emeritus of Kobe University generously contributed to IMLA E-library the electronic edition of his book entitled Theory and Practice of Ship Handling (ISBN: 978-425-90231-6) which was published in 2012 by Seizando-Shoten Publishing Co. Ltd. He also offered a hard copy of this book as a present to IMLA Chair Prof. Jin Yongxing.

Prof. Kinzo Inoue earned Ph.D in engineering at Kyoto University. He worked for Nippon Yusen Kaisha and later for Kobe University of Mercantile Marine as a professor, and held the captain’s position for the school’s training ship “Fukae-maru” in 1992 and in 2000 served as a Vice President of the University. In 2004, when the University was integrated with Kobe University, he became a Professor at Kobe University and in 2005 held the dean position of the Faculty of Maritime Sciences at Kobe University. Currently an associate fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation in England and a honorary member of Japan Institute of Navigation after serving as a Chairman in 2002. He presided over multiple international study projects while serving as an affiliate professor at Shanghai Maritime University.

Ship handling is the operation to shift or stop a ship as intended safely and effectively under any given environmental circumstances. The expertise required of persons engaged in ship handling must be a reasonable application of expertise acquired from empirical achievements backed by scientific knowledge. Theory and Practice of Ship Handling is prepared for persons engaged in ship handing but also for those who are intending to study ship handling from the beginning so that they may study related basic scientific knowledge as theoretically as possible. The contents of the book include four volumes namely Introduction, Principle of Ship Handling, Practical Ship Handling, and Ship Handling Characteristics Database.
