Seven-Part PDC for Swedish Transport Agency Concludes

A seven-part customized professional development program for maritime surveyors from the Swedish Transport Agency (STA) concluded on 11 April. The program commenced in December and was typically offered in one-week sessions with the final two weeks being delivered consecutively. The overall goal of the program was to provide education in IMO conventions that govern the supervisory activities concerning ship safety and environment.

Throughout the seven weeks, WMU faculty and outside consultants teamed to cover the major topic areas of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS),  Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), and Load Lines. Ronnie Hanzén, STA Chief Surveyor, participated in the final day and closing session. He noted that this is the third time STA has engaged WMU for training purposes and that it is a distinct advantage to the Agency to have WMU as a “local” resource.
