IMLA-INSLC19 Opens in Cape Town

The 19th International Navigation Simulator Lecturers Conference (IMLA-INSLC19) opened on 5 September 2016, in Cape Town, South Africa – the first ever for an INSLC Conference held in Africa. It was co- hosted by The South African Maritime Training Academy (SAMTRA) and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). Some 50 maritime professionals, trainers, simulator producers attended the 4-day conference and exchanged ideas and experience.

In his opening address to the conference, IMLA Chair Prof. Dr. Jin Yongxing highlighted the distinct role INSLC plays to the maritime education world, and encouraged participants, especially the young, to learn and share from each other. INSLC Chair Prof. Knud Benedict, CPUT Granger Bay Vice Chancellor Dr. Prins Nevhutlu, SAMTRA Chair Person Mr. Fred Jacobs, welcomed the participants.

The topic of the conference was centered around new technologies for nautical simulators, challenges by new procedures in navigation management, assessment of student results in simulation training. Participants had a technical tour at SAMTRA and visited their simulators and teaching and research facilities.

At the Conference Hall 

The INSLC Steering Committee members met during the conference. Prof. Dr. Hiroak Kobayashi from Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, was declared to retire from the Steering Committee. The INSLC Chair Prof. Knud Benedict expresses his appreciation and gratefulness for the long and effective support which was given by Prof. Kobayashi to the maritime community. He is replaced by Prof. ISHIBASHI Atsushi. As anther outcome of the meeting, it was decided Auckland will be the next venue for INSLC20 in 2018, and the New Zealand Maritime School NZMS at MANUKAU Institute of Technology is the hosting organization.

INSLC, as part of the International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA), provides a forum for professionals involved in the advancement of maritime education, training, and research, specifically through the use of simulation. The conference plays an important role as an effective medium for the interchange of ideas and experience among members and guests of the INSLC and presents an Ideal opportunity for both simulator manufacturers and simulator users to discuss issues of mutual interest for training and research development.
