2012-10-26

The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006, whose entry into force is anticipated in the coming year, is touted as both the Seafarers’ Bill of Rights and the Fourth Pillar of Maritime Safety. It contains detailed provisions that require uniform standards of welfare and safety for seafarers, further promoting a level playing field among operators in the maritime industry. MLC 2006 is packaged in a more readily enforceable format and incorporates novel amendment procedures that will ensure its continued relevance. Once it enters into force, MLC 2006 will lift international maritime labour standards as never before. As with any major convention, MLC 2006’s entry in the world stage will also imply legal, commercial, and practical implications for different stakeholders. It therefore behoves all maritime professionals to gain an intimate knowledge of and familiarity with this important convention.

This workshop will provide an understanding of the various maritime labour issues facing the maritime industry in the advent of the entry into force of MLC 2006. It discusses the key concepts, rights, duties, and responsibilities articulated in the MLC 2006. Aside from a presentation of the provisions of the Convention, the workshop includes a number of group exercises.
