Each year the Massachusetts’ Governor recognized the twenty-nine public community college, state college university and state university students for their academic achievements and civic contributions to the Commonwealth. Earlier this month, Governor Deval Patrick, honored Academy senior, Lauren DeNapoli as one of the 29 Who Shine stars, at a ceremony held at the State House in Boston.
1/C Lauren DeNapoli, a Marine Transportation major, is MMA’s 2013 Regimental Training and Retention Officer. A native of Boston, she graduated from Boston Latin Academy, Boston, MA, in 2009. As RTRO, DeNapoli has worked closely with the Admissions Department, Academics and Student Services, monitoring cadet’s grades among other things. “I picked MMA after attending an environmental symposium there my sophomore year of high school. I fell in love with the Academy and the opportunities that I would have after graduation. I planned on majoring in Emergency Management but after sea term, decided I wanted to go out to sea as a career. I plan on getting into the maritime industry in the offshore field upon graduation,” commented DeNapoli.
“Lauren’s story embodies the importance of having access to high-quality, affordable public higher education,” said Governor Patrick. “I am pleased to honor each with the 29 Who Shine Award. They remind us that investing in them is investing in our future,” the Governor continued. Richard Freeland, MA Commissioner of Higher Education added, “Our data tells us that one year after graduation, nine out of every ten public college and university students remain here in Massachusetts, living and working or furthering their studies. These students truly represent the future citizenry and workforce of the state. They are very high caliber, a sign that our future appears to be in good hands.”
There are many stars at this college on the Canal but only one annual winner of this prestigious award. Congratulations to Lauren DeNapoli, a truly stellar cadet.
